Chapter

Twenty

I tried to hide my groan.

Lady Maggia motioned to the portico chairs overlooking the olive grove. I sat nervously, perched on the edge like I might need to make a quick escape. She sank into one of the chairs like she had all the time in the world. Her judgmental gaze raked over me. “I’m actually a bit surprised to still see you here.”

My fingers curled tightly on the arm rails. Was she serious?

“I’m not dead yet.”

“Oh, I wasn’t referring to the Claim. I was thinking about our previous conversation about the progeny clause. I thought surely it would have been the end of your relationship when you brought it up with Severn. I didn’t think you were the type to be content as his whore instead of his wife.”

The insult struck me like a kick to the face. It took some effort to swallow down my anger. “Severn and I discussed the clause—I don’t think it will be a problem.”

“Really? Because he told me you had quite the argument about it.”

I jolted, rattled. “Severn told you about our argument?”

“Severn tells me everything, I already told you that.”

Fresh anger bloomed in my chest. Was this what they’d been whispering about in the garden, arm in arm?

I grit my teeth to stop from saying something I’d regret. I started to rise from my chair. “How nice for you. If you’ll excuse me, I should shower—”

“No. You aren’t excused.” Her eyes were on fire. I realized my head was higher than hers, and I quickly sat back down.

She leaned forward as her voice dropped to a low rumble. “Is it money, then? What will it take?”

“I’m not sure I understand.”

“Don’t play innocent. Not even you can be that naive. What will it take for you to leave Severn?”

I wasn’t sure I was hearing her correctly. A fae princess was actually trying to buy me off? For a moment I was speechless. When I finally found my voice again, it was shaking.

“Nothing. Nothing can make me leave him. I’d never trade my love for him like that. And I’m deeply insulted that you would assume that of me. Do you really hate me so much?”

She made a small tsk sound. “I don’t hate you, girl. And fae cannot lie, remember. On the contrary, I think you’re one of the stronger human specimens I’ve come across in some time. Which is why it’s so disastrous that you’re on Severn’s arm.”

The backhanded compliment was the only thing keeping me from storming off. “So why do you object to our relationship so much?”

“He’s a fae prince. Regent of the New Court, one of the most powerful organizations within the Gifted Realm. And for the last several weeks, he’s completely abandoned his responsibilities. His court back in New York is falling apart. Fae treaty deals are crumbling. All because he can think of nothing but a dying human girl.”

Dying. There. Someone finally came out and said it.

“So,” she continued in a hard edge, “I want you gone because it’s ruining Severn—and putting the entire balance of courtly power in jeopardy.
